Periyar National Park: History

About a century ago, a British engineer, Col. J. Pennycuick, chalked out a plan to dam the Periyar River. Subsequently, a dam was constructed in 1895 on the river Periyar. A lake called Periyar Lake was thus created in 1899. This resulted in the adjoining forests and the lake being granted protection, by the Maharaja of Travancore. In 1950, the forest part was declared as Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and in 1978 it was known to be a Tiger Reserve. Later in 1982 the government of India preliminary notified the core area of the forest as Periyar National Park.
In 1991, the Periyar National Park was brought under the 'Project Elephant'. Recently, in 2001 the Periyar area has been divided as Periyar east and Periyar west. Now, the Periyar National Park is known for its vivid fauna like tigers, elephants, elephant safari and the natural beauty of Periyar Lake.
